Luke Shaw’s absence from Euro 2024, according to Frank Lampard, has been much missed by Gareth Southgate, and an attacking threat and lack of balance down the left wing has turned into a real “problem.”
Shaw hasn’t played for Manchester United since mid-February because of a major hamstring injury, but he was still included in England’s 26-man team for the tournament this summer.
Due to the injury, Shaw will not play in the Three Lions’ first two group stage matches in Germany. Instead, Kieran Trippier will start on Southgate’s left side of defense against Denmark and Serbia.
Although it has been confirmed that England will move on to the knockout round, Harry Kane and company have generally been criticized harshly by fans, commentators, and former players for their lackluster and inconsistent performances.
Shaw was back in training on Monday, though, and all 26 players in Southgate’s squad were going through their paces in preparation for England’s match against Slovenia tonight evening in Cologne. tonight might be a positive sign for the national team.
Although it is unlikely that the former Southampton full-back would start against Slovenia, there is still hope that he might play in the next game, when England plays Slovenia for a spot in the quarterfinals.
The former Chelsea and England player Lampard commented on the team’s underwhelming performances thus far on BBC Radio 5 Live, saying, “Not having a natural left-sided left-back has been a big deal for him because that felt really good to me watching the last tournaments when Luke Shaw was there.”
Luke Shaw was far more aggressive on that side of the field, and Kyle Walker could remain longer and form this three-man formation at the back.
Afterwards, with the danger on the left, you would have the two and have the attacking players in between the lines.
He will want to find a solution since we haven’t had that.
Trippier is a “fantastic player,” in Lampard’s opinion, but Shaw’s absence at left-back has “affected the whole balance of the team.”
“I believe it’s possible to use right-footed center backs on both teams if the left player is comfortable enough to make the appropriate pass,” Lampard continued.
To be honest, I know Marc Guehi well, and he can definitely judge whether to play into midfield or out to a full-back.
“I believe that Trippier is an excellent player who has demonstrated that for both club and country, but you’re just asking players to have different qualities.”
“You’re just talking about a left-back,” some might say, but when we see the German side play in the present day, we can see how talented both full backs are in terms of style and technique. It’s crucial that you get those details correct.
Since those small details are so significant, it is clear that Gareth has experienced this. He has made an effort to get Luke Shaw fit, however it is evident that this is not happening right now.
However, it goes beyond just stating, “That’s just one player,” since that throws off the team’s whole balance. Then perhaps the issue is what the alternative option is.
Could we get that side that stays wide some more true high attacking width? You could get more dynamic runs in behind as a result. That’s definitely something he could consider, in my opinion.
The Three Lions’ 106-time captain, Frank Lampard, is thrilled with Crystal Palace defender Guehi’s tournament debut.
“I’m happy for him.” I made his Chelsea debut for him. He’s a really kind and modest young man,” he said.
It was evident that he possessed all the qualities that would help him succeed, especially the disposition.
His goal was to succeed. “I thought it would be great to work with him as a coach at that age because it’s amazing to see a young child come through with that humility and want to do well.”
