Jurrien Timber, an Arsenal defender, has urged Ajax to sign Burnley striker Wout Weghorst, a former Manchester United player.
Weghorst, who played on loan for United for part of the previous season, made a second impression this summer as an impact substitute for the Netherlands national team at Euro 2024.
After spending the previous season on loan at Bundesliga team Hoffenheim, where he scored seven goals in thirty games, the striker still has a year left on his Burnley contract.
However, the 31-year-old, who Burnley signed for £12 million little over two years ago, is now being linked to Ajax.
When asked about Ajax’s proposed moves for Nice midfielder Pablo Rosario and Weghorst, Timber told Ajax Showtime: ‘Those would be great acquisitions.
That’s an absolute winner, Wout. You can use him at Ajax. One hundred per cent.’
When Timber visited the Johan Cruijff Arena in September of last year, he said that he was taken aback by the condition of Ajax. He had watched his old team lose to Feyenoord 3-0 before the match was called off due to flares being thrown into the field by enraged fans.
“You could already tell it wasn’t good by watching TV.” To witness and feel it firsthand like that makes you realize that, indeed, the team has fallen from grace for a long, said Timber.
“Well, it was that realization you had that day—wow, I had no idea it was that bad.” It was pretty intense at that point.
Timber is now preparing for a new season with Arsenal after his debut campaign was heavily disrupted due to knee surgery last August.
The Netherlands international provides Mikel Arteta with a versatile option in defence and says he is happy to play in any position.
‘It doesn’t really matter to me where I play,’ said Timber.
When I play, I’m happy. I just want to play for Arsenal and shine, that’s why I came.
Timber revealed he was also keen to remain close to the team’s preparations during his recovery from surgery last season in order to aid return to the side.
‘This was possible on a tactical level and you just want to get to know the team better,’ said Timber, who returned as a second-half substitute in Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Everton in May.
Next, you make an effort to be as near the team as you can. I adhered to the same schedules and frequently went out to supper with the boys in order to see them.
