Although Youssouf Fofana and AC Milan have reached a four-year agreement, Manchester United may yet try to sabotage a deal for the France international.
After concluding agreements to sign Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, United is keen to add at least one midfield player this summer.
The club and Paris Saint-Germain are negotiating over a trade for Manuel Ugarte, who the Ligue 1 winners estimate to be worth £58 million.
Other alternatives for strengthening in the center of the park are also being considered by United, with Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad being one such option.
However, French rumors state that United is also interested in Monaco’s Fofana.
AC Milan are eager to bring the 25-year-old to the San Siro and according to RMC Sport, have reached an agreement over a four-year contract.
The Rossoneri however are still to agree a fee with Monaco for a player who has just one year remaining on his contract.
Despite that agreement with Milan, the article claims that United and another Champions League team are still considering a summer transfer for Fofana.
After initially seeking a price of about €25 million for its midfield player, Monaco is reportedly willing to compromise for about €18 million, according to Sky Italia.
United have long-standing issues in midfield which were thrown under the spotlight again last season as Casemiro suffered a worrying dip in form.
The Brazil international, who has two more years left on his contract, has been strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer but no formal offers have materialised at this stage.
Scott McTominay meanwhile has been the subject of interest from Fulham, who saw an offer rejected by United this week.
United have also declined to trigger their option to sign Sofyan Amrabat for €20million after his loan spell at the club last summer.
