Marc Cucurella claims that despite going through “some difficult years” at Stamford Bridge, he is “happy” at Chelsea and hasn’t even considered going back to Barcelona.
The 25-year-old left-back received harsh criticism at times during the last Premier League season as Chelsea ended in sixth position, ultimately costing manager Mauricio Pochettino his job.
Cucurella has fallen well short of expectations after a high-profile £60 million move in 2022—a record amount for a player leaving Brighton at the time. Rumors surfaced in January that the Spaniard actively wanted to leave.
However, Cucurella is energized by the task of playing for new boss Enzo Maresca and isn’t even considering a return to Barcelona, where he played as a youth player.
Before moving to Getafe in 2020, the Spain international played 54 times for Barcelona’s B squad and only once for the Catalan giants in the first team.
When asked if he had given the idea of going back to Camp Nou any thought, Cucurella told COPE, “I don’t even think about it, it doesn’t even cross my mind.”
I believe that has already taken place. You never know what may occur, but that’s not anything I’m considering.
“I’ve had some challenging years at Chelsea, but my family and I are comfortable.”
Cucurella had previously been connected to Real Madrid, but the full-back was eager to deny any such rumors.
A rumor was circulating. When asked if he knew anything about moving to Madrid, he said, “I don’t know much either.”
“However, I attempt to limit the amount of information they share with me if it won’t get done because you get too crazy.”
During the past two seasons, Cucurella has made 59 appearances for Chelsea, but he has yet to bring home any silverware.
He signed his current deal when he first arrived in west London, and it is valid until the summer of 2028.
Cucurella angered Gary Neville last week, who claimed that the defender’s debut at Euro 2024 was proof that Spain was lacking “something” in their lineup.
“He’s a busy little full-back who is aggressive and tenacious,” the former England and Manchester United right-back remarked on ITV Sport.
Everyone is still in disbelief at the price tag.
Although Spain’s defense has a great deal of experience today, there’s still something that seems to be lacking that gives you the impression that they will win the game.
“I have to admit, one of the main reasons we believe that is because he plays left back.”
