With Marseille starting early transfer negotiations with Manchester United this summer, Mason Greenwood is reportedly leaning toward a summer transfer to Marseille.
The 22-year-old striker hasn’t featured for United since his arrest in January 2022 on charges of assault, controlling behavior, and attempted rape.
Greenwood’s charges were withdrawn in February 2023. Last summer, he signed a season-long loan with Getafe after United decided not to reintegrate him into the club.
Italy has shown a great deal of interest in United Academy. Lazio allegedly made an offer of £30 million to lure him to the Italian capital, but Juventus is eager to recruit him.
The Sports report Marseille has now entered the competition to sign him. The Ligue 1 team, which named former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach, has begun negotiations with United; however, financial matters have not yet been addressed.
According to the article, the player and the club have had “positive dialogue,” with Greenwood reportedly favoring a transfer to Stade Velodrome.
For the player, who was previously thought to be one of their most promising prospects, United is reportedly holding out for a payment of £40 million.
To assist finance incoming transfer activity at Old Trafford, they would prefer a permanent sale this summer, but another loan might be taken into consideration.
Additionally, United hasn’t completely ruled out the prospect of having Greenwood rejoin the team for the preseason.
On July 8, players who are not competing in Copa America or Euro 2024 are anticipated to return to Carrington.
Greenwood is anticipated to report for training on that day if there isn’t a definite move by then. Jadon Sancho is another talent that United is hoping to capitalize on this summer.
Since being banished from the team by Erik ten Hag in September of last year and going on loan to Borussia Dortmund for the second half of the season, the winger has not trained with United.
Sancho is also expected to cost United about £40 million.
