Due to a knee injury, Japanese defender Risa Shimizu of Manchester City will miss the rest of the Olympics.

The 28-year-old Shimizu signed a deal with City this summer after it expired with West Ham, another Women’s Super League team.

She was injured in her knee during Japan’s opening match at Paris 2024, which ended in a 2-1 loss to Spain.

“Risa will return to the City Football Academy for further assessment by the club’s medical team,” the club stated in a statement.

On September 22, Gareth Taylor’s team takes on Arsenal in the WSL opener.
