Portugal manager Roberto Martinez expressed concern about fans invading the pitch to take selfies with players during his team’s Euro 2024 victory against Turkey.
During Portugal’s 3-0 victory against Dortmund, five people attempted to take selfies with captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch.
Security officers at the Westfalenstadion had to track down each supporter, as players and spectators in the stands became more agitated. “It’s of concern.
Today, the fans’ intentions were excellent. “We all appreciate a fan who recognizes big stars and icons,” Martinez remarked.
“But if their motives are wrong, you [must] realize that this is a difficult time. We must exercise caution.
With all the protection, it shouldn’t occur. It’s not the proper method, therefore we should also send a message to the fans.
In the future, things might grow worse. The players shouldn’t be left so exposed on the field.” A small youngster was the first fan to onto the field, and Ronaldo hugged him before grinning for a picture.
However, Ronaldo became irritated when a third individual attempted it in the second half as Portugal was getting ready to defend a corner and had to be restrained by security personnel near the goal.
At full-time, Ronaldo pushed away a fifth supporter and was escorted off the pitch by a member of security.
However, Portugal team-mate Bernardo Silva said he was “personally not really concerned” by the pitch invasions.
“It’s just a bit annoying in terms of always having to stop the game because a fan enters the pitch,” said Silva.
“I think that’s the price you pay for being so recognised in the world of football and having a player like [Ronaldo] with us in the team. But in terms of being in danger, no I don’t feel that personally.”
“Questions will be asked of the security,” stated Ian Dennis, senior football correspondent for commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“The security here has been lacking and this stadium will host a semi-final – they’re going to have to tighten it up,” he stated.
Before taking any further action, the disciplinary authority of FIFA will wait to hear from officials and review their findings.
