Manchester United should sign Teddy Sheringham, the England star, following his outstanding performances at Euro 2024.

After making it all the way to the final in Germany, England was devastated to lose 2-1 to eventual victors Spain.

It was the second consecutive Euro final that England had lost, and it also meant that Gareth Southgate‘s reign as manager of the Three Lions was coming to an end.

Some players’ reputations were improved by the end of the tournament, despite the fact that England mostly flattered to deceive their way to the final.

One of those was Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi who started all bar one of England’s fixtures and formed an impressive defensive partnership with John Stones.

Guehi, who allegedly rejected negotiations to extend his contract at Selhurst Park, has just two years left on his contract. Sheringham thinks United could take advantage of this and attempt to entice the 24-year-old to Old Trafford this summer.

He said to Online Poker, “I’d quite happily see Manchester United go for him after the way Marc Guehi played for England during the Euros.”

‘I think he could be a star for the club over the next few years. He’s already got a lot of leadership qualities at a young age through his captaincy of Crystal Palace and he just seems assured in everything he does.

‌‘That’s what United need at the back – leadership and composure. They played with far too many centre-back partnerships last season and you could tell there was no cohesion between the players and goalkeeper even towards the end of the season.

Over the next years, I believe he might become a star for the team. His tenure as Crystal Palace’s captain has given him a great deal of leadership experience at a young age, and he exudes confidence in everything he does.

That’s what United needs in the back: poise and leadership. Last season, they utilized an excessive number of center-back pairings, and it was evident that there was a lack of unity among the players and goalie even as the season came to a close.

‌‘Guehi was probably one of the standout performers for an England team that got to the final and one of the players that avoided criticism throughout, so he’s shown he can do it on the big stage, and there’s no bigger stage in English football than Manchester United.’

United have made signing a centre-back their number-one priority in the transfer window this summer and have explored deals for both Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt.

The club were also keen on a deal Lille’s Leny Yoro and have now seen a €50m (£42.2m) bid accepted for the 18-year-old, with the Frenchman expected to travel to Old Trafford to complete a medical and finalise a contract.

After Joshua Zirkzee’s arrival, it would be Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first transfer window and second summer signing.
